Sam's Park & Shop

Built in 1930, Sam's Park & Shop in Cleveland Park was one of the first* shopping centers,** i.e. with dedicated customer parking, in the United States. Its 50,000 square feet contains room for 15 shops the anchor of which is Petco.***

Located at the corner of Ordway Street and Connecticut Avenue, there have been as many as 14 businesses on the strip; the Cleveland Park Metro station runs alongside. Photos are below.

This is how Sam's Park & Shop looked in the early part of the 21st century.

Parking is available in Sam's Park & Shop of course, and it's free if you can show a receipt from one of the shops and you get out of there within a certain length of time. How long? Well, it's either 30 minutes or one hour depending on which shop you patronized. Odd, but true.
Otherwise it's three bucks an hour.
